GUTS2026：ゲスト / Mike Mayoros

今回のゲスト、マイクさんについて少し触れておきます。Let me take a moment to introduce this year’s guest, Mike.

カヤックインストラクターとしては、日本ではまだあまり馴染のない方ですよね。初めてお会いしたのは、昨年の「Ukee Greenland Weekend」でした。ジェームスの家で“ブルースさん”の祟りを食らった自分は、予定していたロールクラスのデモが出来ないぐらいのダメージを受けてしまったのです。何のことか分からんでしょう(笑)。まぁ、これについては、ご興味があれば後日お話しします。
そこで代役として白羽の矢が立ったのがマイクさんでした。デモ直前に軽く打ち合わせをしました。飲み込みが早く、身体能力もかなり高い印象を受けました。実際のデモでは、私よりも数段上のパフォーマンスを発揮したと思います。

その後も同じクラスで、教える側としてご一緒しました。ときどき、確認のために彼が教えている様子を見ていたのですが、いわゆる「イケイケ」ではなく、常に謙虚な姿勢がとても良かったです。みんながみんなそうとは限りませんが、「教える側」というのは上から目線になりがちです。マイクさんにはこの目線がまったく感じられませんでした。ちょっと「目から鱗」でしたね。もちろん、ロールの腕前も完璧です。なので、教わる側からの信頼は絶大、そんな好印象をもった次第です。

いい原石です。磨けば大きく化ける可能性が高そうです。これは、初めてジェームスと会った時と同じなんです。2013年のQajaqJPNのイベントに彼を招待したとき、まだまだ知名度が低かったのですが、それからというもの、メキメキと腕を上げて現在に至ります。今やグリーンランドカヤックの世界で彼を知らない人はいないでしょう。こういう展開をマイクさんにも期待しています。きっとジェームスとはまた違ったタイプのカリスマ性を持ったインストラクターになるのではないでしょうか。

As a kayak instructor, he’s probably still not very familiar to many people in Japan. I first met him at last year’s Ukee Greenland Weekend. At the time, I was staying at James’s place and somehow fell victim to what I jokingly call “Bruce’s curse,” which left me so worn out that I couldn’t even perform the rolling demo I had planned.
You probably have no idea what I’m talking about (lol). If you’re curious, I’ll tell you the story another time.

So I asked Mike to fill in for the demonstration. We had only a brief discussion just before the demo, but I immediately felt that he was quick to grasp things and had excellent physical ability. In the actual demonstration, I think he delivered a performance that was clearly a few levels above mine.

After that, we continued teaching together in the same class. From time to time, I watched him teach, partly just to check in. What stood out was his attitude—he wasn’t flashy or overly assertive at all, but consistently humble. Not every instructor manages this, but those in teaching roles often end up speaking from a slightly superior position. I never sensed that kind of attitude from Mike. It was genuinely eye-opening for me. Of course, his rolling skills are flawless, and as a result, he earned tremendous trust from the participants. That left me with a very strong and positive impression.


He’s a real gem. With some polishing, he has the potential to grow into something truly remarkable. I felt the same way when I first met James. When we invited him to a QajaqJPN event back in 2013, he was still relatively unknown, but his skills developed rapidly after that. Today, there’s hardly anyone in the Greenland kayaking world who doesn’t know his name. I’m hoping for a similar path for Mike. I believe he’ll become an instructor with a different kind of charisma from James—his own unique presence. Please join GUTS 2026 and take his rolling classes. I highly recommend it.
